Her connection to ordinary people battling poverty and disease,
Did render her a much beloved champion who did seize,
The opportunity to make differences whose legacy survives,
Her spirit and warm smile still uplifting our lives;

She eschewed media and attention for her benefit,
Rather turning the spotlight on those deemed unfit,
Those suffering in silence from war, famine and AIDS,
Previously shunned or ignored in the Royals’ parades;

She shone like a beacon of light to the world,
Despite battling the currents, her tranquility swirled,
By winds of competing Princely affections,
Leaving her without husband, and stripped of protections;

With dignity, fashion and nurturing love,
She doted on her children, but spoiled them not from above,
Taking them by the hand to meet orphans in pain,
Showing deep compassion, without need to explain;

For she led by example, with deeds over words,
Embracing those ravaged by landmines and swords,
Her fragile body departed one fateful August day,
Yet her spirit forever holds us in her sway.
